Planning a Fun Pet Appreciation Week

Pet Awareness Week (PAW) was created by the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1981 to raise awareness of how important pets are in the lives of humans, and to share tips and tricks for caring for pets and maintaining their health, happiness, and safety. You can use Pet Awareness Week, which falls on June 4-10 this year, as an excuse to pamper your pet, show him how much you care for him, and spend some quality time together.

Buy Your Pet a New Toy or Accessory

If your pet likes playing with toys, buy him a new one and set aside some extra play time each day during Pet Appreciation Week. If your pet doesn’t play with toys, get him a new enrichment tool or accessory. A new leash, harness, pet bed, exercise wheel, play tunnel, perch, or even a cardboard box can be a fun way to interact with your pet and teach him something new.

Make His Favorite Meal or Treat

Another fun way to celebrate your pet during Pet Awareness Week is to make him his favorite meal or treat. Check with your veterinarian first to confirm that what you’re planning is safe and healthy for your pet. A lot of human foods can be toxic or dangerous to different animals, but some are safe in moderation.

Plan a Photoshoot

Your pet won’t care about this one as much, but it will be fun for you–and it gives you a chance to enjoy some quality time together! Schedule a photoshoot with you and your pet, or take some new, cute photos of your pet playing with his new toy.

Visit the Veterinarian for a Checkup

Your pet should visit the veterinarian each year for a general checkup. The veterinarian will make sure your pet is healthy overall, and will evaluate his weight, diet, nutrition, and appearance. He will screen your pet for disease and illness, and make sure his vaccinations are up to date.

Don’t forget to take your pet to the veterinarian every year. These annual visits are the best way to keep tabs on your pet’s health and make sure he stays happy, healthy, and safe.
