Helping Your Pet Maintain Health & Wellness in the New Year

In addition to setting New Year’s resolutions for yourself, you can also create health and wellness resolutions for your pet. Your pet’s health needs may change from year to year as he ages, and it’s important to stay on track. Setting these health and wellness resolutions for your pet will help you maintain your pet’s health and wellness in the new year.

Start the Year Off Right with a Health Check Up

You can start the year off with a clean bill of health for your pet by visiting the veterinarian for a check up. Your veterinarian will evaluate your pet’s overall health, weight, teeth, and diet and exercise routine. Depending on your pet’s age and weight, your veterinarian may do a blood test to determine if your pet has any dietary deficiencies or is at risk for any health problems. This may inform your pet’s diet and exercise routine going forward.

Be More Active

You and your pet should stay active during the new year, and make time for play and fun. Your pet needs regular exercise and play time to stay alert, healthy, and at the proper weight. Try to get in a long walk each day, or schedule 10-15 minute increments of play time throughout the day.

Stick to a Healthy Diet

Just like humans, pets need a healthy, balanced diet to thrive. Don’t feed your pet table scraps or unhealthy human food. If your pet is 7 years or older, it may be time to switch him to senior pet food. Ask your veterinarian if you need to change your pet’s diet to address any deficiencies, or to reduce your pet’s risk of age-related health issues like diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, and obesity.

Make sure that regular veterinary visits are a part of your pet’s New Year’s resolutions. If your pet hasn’t had a veterinary checkup in the last 12 months, schedule one in the new year.
